There is no single correct device count for a 100 Mbps connection. Ten mostly idle devices may use less bandwidth than two devices carrying large transfers and high-quality streams.
Estimate activities instead of headcount
Add the likely simultaneous demand and allow headroom for bursts. A television stream, video call and cloud backup all draw differently on download and upload. Also consider the router's handling of multiple clients and coverage across rooms. If the network struggles, identify which active task is consuming capacity rather than disconnecting every low-data smart device indiscriminately.
Think about concurrent work, not a fixed limit
A connected device can be idle, lightly active or moving large amounts of data. That makes a single maximum-device claim misleading without a usage scenario. Estimate active streams, calls, transfers and camera uploads during the busiest period. Leave spare capacity for bursts and remember that outgoing bandwidth may be different from download capacity.
The router also has to maintain wireless connections and serve the rooms where those devices sit. Use Ethernet for stationary high-use equipment where practical. If performance degrades only when many clients are present, check router load, coverage and software support alongside the plan. Review connected devices periodically so forgotten equipment or an unexpected background transfer does not distort the diagnosis.
Your practical checklist
- Count active workloads.
- Allow room for short bursts.
- Check router performance and upload demand.
Frequently asked question
Can idle smart devices still affect the connection?
Some send updates or telemetry, but their demand varies. Measure actual activity and identify heavy transfers rather than treating all connected devices as equal.
Discuss your connection with Fiber Link
For your home or workspace, share your full address, floor, landmark and expected use. Ask for current availability, the complete payable amount and equipment terms before booking. Installation timing, coverage and any promotional benefits need confirmation for the exact property.
