Wi-Fi coverage for multi-floor homes in Westend Marg

A single router can struggle to cover multiple floors even when the incoming broadband line is fast. Floors, stairwells and the location of the main connection determine how a multi-floor network should be arranged.

A single router can struggle to cover multiple floors even when the incoming broadband line is fast. Floors, stairwells and the location of the main connection determine how a multi-floor network should be arranged.

Plan the links between floors

Place access points where people use devices, with a reliable connection back to the main router. Ethernet backhaul is often preferable when cabling is possible. If using wireless mesh, position each node where it still receives a useful upstream signal, not inside the dead zone. Test a call while moving between floors to check practical roaming behaviour.

Give each access point a strong connection

An access point needs a reliable path back to the main router. Ethernet backhaul avoids using the same wireless path for that link where cabling is possible. With wireless backhaul, each node must receive enough signal from the upstream node to carry useful traffic. A node placed beyond that range cannot create capacity that never reaches it.

Check equipment compatibility, Ethernet port speeds and the recommended operating mode before installation. Avoid accidental double routing when combining devices; follow provider and manufacturer guidance. Test at the farthest room and during movement between rooms. Roaming also depends on the client device, so do not assume every phone will switch at the same point or without a brief interruption.

Your practical checklist

  1. Map occupied rooms on each floor.
  2. Check Ethernet backhaul options.
  3. Test roaming with a live call.

Frequently asked question

Should a wireless mesh node go directly in the dead zone?

Usually it should sit closer to the main network, where its upstream signal is still useful. Test placement rather than relying only on distance.

Discuss your connection with Fiber Link
