A dead zone is a place where devices receive too little useful wireless signal to work reliably. Raising the broadband plan speed usually does little for a room that cannot maintain a good link to the router.
Improve the path into the room
First try a more open router location and test with normal doors and furniture in place. If the problem persists, use a wired access point or a mesh node with a strong upstream connection. Avoid installing a wireless extender at the deepest point of the dead zone. Check both directions of a video call, since receiving a page does not prove upload reliability.
Give each access point a strong connection
An access point needs a reliable path back to the main router. Ethernet backhaul avoids using the same wireless path for that link where cabling is possible. With wireless backhaul, each node must receive enough signal from the upstream node to carry useful traffic. A node placed beyond that range cannot create capacity that never reaches it.
Check equipment compatibility, Ethernet port speeds and the recommended operating mode before installation. Avoid accidental double routing when combining devices; follow provider and manufacturer guidance. Test at the farthest room and during movement between rooms. Roaming also depends on the client device, so do not assume every phone will switch at the same point or without a brief interruption.
Your practical checklist
- Identify the edge of useful signal.
- Choose a reliable backhaul path.
- Test calls in the formerly weak room.
Frequently asked question
Should a wireless mesh node go directly in the dead zone?
Usually it should sit closer to the main network, where its upstream signal is still useful. Test placement rather than relying only on distance.
